Clamshell Relay Race and Raffle!

For 27 years, the Health Center Board has hosted the Clamshell Relay Race and Raffle, a madcap event that has everything—strange and wonderful awards, tasty treats, and amazing raffle prizes.

The race starts at the entrance to the Lion’s Club. Boom! (That’s the starting cannon.)  One relay partner runs to the 5th Maine, picks up a clamshell and heads back to the starting line. The clamshell is given to the relay partner. (We call this the “handoff.”)  The second runner ambles down Island Avenue... past Hannigan’s, past Brad’s bike shop, down to Centennial Beach and returns to the starting line, which is now... the finish line. Whew. Whew.

This past July 4, in what was to have been the 28th year, due to COVID-19 and the pandemic, we were not able to hold this cherished event, in which islanders...

HAVE FUN AND HELP US RAISE MONEY TO TRAIN THE NEXT GENERATION OF ISLAND HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS!

We thank those who contributed to the scholarship fund in lieu of racing and buying raffle tickets, and the good news is WE WERE ABLE TO AWARD FIVE SCHOLARSHIPS to islanders pursuing careers in the health care professions for the 2020-21 academic year. Thank you everyone, and we hope the race and raffle will return in 2021!

Clamshell Relay Race Scholarship

Peaks Island Health Center Clamshell Relay Race Scholarships ($1,000+) are awarded to Peaks Island residents pursuing a healthcare occupation through an accredited academic program. If you are a high school senior or an adult entering this career path we encourage you to apply. Proceeds from the Clamshell Relay race and raffle will go directly to fund this scholarship each summer. Healthcare occupations include but not limited to the following: nurse, doctor, medical assistant, x-ray technologist, phlebotomist, nutritionist, medical social worker, physical or occupational therapist or EMT.
